Star Wars the Black Series and sneak Peak of some Lego 2014 sets

The black series has been in Australia for around 2 months now and so far all that has been seen retail wise is series 1 and 2 of the 3.75" and series 1 of the 6", series 2 has already dropped in the US and can be found here at on line e-tailers in most countries presently.

Series 2 of the 6" is rather impressive, I think the character selection is stronger with Boba Fett being there, Greedo is a far stronger character than Biggs and has been long overdue also, both Han and Leia Speak for themselves too.

My criticism of the 3.75" line has been its rather week character selection wave 2 does nothing to refute this idea either, clearly Pablo Jill, Mara Jade Skywalker and Luminara Unduli are the strength of the wave although this has also been tempered by a sub par Mara Jade figure, the full wave can been seen below:

Personally I feel that Hasbro have thrown far too many troopers into the first two waves and really should have thought about some other characters to break it up a little.

A list of the current waves and the pending third wave can be seen at Yakface in their toyguide section, several other figures from the second half of this year can be seen there also.

Jedi Temple Archives have had some images up of some of the third wave of figures coming out in the black series 3.75" the more impressive figures are Darth Plageuis, Vizam and Merumeru, suffice to say that Rex and Neyo are the only clones of this wave too, hopefully this trend continues next year.

Lego:

Someone on the internet has shown some images of the upcoming lego sets for next year as you can see from the clip the figures are place holders only, these are working images one would imagine, on first impression I think the cannon lacks, the little 'chibi' vehicles look rather good, the AT-AP which has been previewed at SDCC looks rather good but its a little light on as a wave, personally I believe that this is the wave suffers from being the first of Disney's involvement since the takeover of Lucasfilm and its subsidiaries, hopefully it is only a glitch.

Celebration Europe and Star Wars.

Wow... what a start to celebration!

starwars.com has a few blogs, one confirming John Williams as the composer for episode 7, possibly the worst kept secret! The other cool piece of information related to Star Wars Rebels, Dave Filoni provided some screen grabs from the upcoming season, the man never disappoints.

Here is some of the artwork from this upcoming series..

These images can be found at starwars.com

Looking at these pics it can be clearly seen that McQuarrie has definitely inspired this series.  I cannot wait till we see some more.

On a local note there has been a recent influx of Star Wars products with the Lego 2013 line being:

  • 75015 Corporate Alliance Tank Droid.
  • 75016 Homing Spider Droid.
  • 75017 Duel on Geonosis.
  • 75018 Jek-14's Stealth Starfighter.
  • 75019 AT-TE
  • 75020 Jabba's Sail Barge.
  • 75021 Republic Gunship.
These can be found on the Lego store here

Another product that has shown up without much fanfare has been The Vintage Collection X-Wing (specifically Biggs red X-Wing), I purchased this item my self yesterday at Toys R Us in Melbourne.

75025 Jedi Defender-class Cruiser

Pictures from Eurobricks showing the new Old Republic set to be released this winter.

This will be one of the winter exclusive sets, possibly a Toys R Us exclusive here in Oz although you never can tell.

This set strangely comes with a Sith Holocron, perhaps this is the point as they are hunting the Jedi to get it back.
I like the way the front of the ship opens up, gives a nice bridge feel to the ship.

The engines look quite big which is nice it gives the appearance of a certain level of size to the ship, perhaps they could've doubled the blue translucent engine as indication of both speed and size, the one looks a little too small in its housing.

The minifigures that accompany this set are:

One being the Sith Warrior, Jedi Consular (white - Murilan) and the Jedi Zabrek.  Funnily enough they have not been given names just their game character class, an unusual step but possibly one that will allow lots of play-ability going forward.  having two of each Sith and Jedi in the one set is nice again, perhaps a republic trooper or two could've been added and that would've filled this set out nicely.

Overall:

This is the 5th Old Republic set in the last 12-18 months which would be safe to assume that there has been a good take up of this product as a sub theme in the Star Wars Universe.  Perhaps going forward we can get a few smugglers and a couple of mercenaries.

Lego Set 75024 HH-87 Starhopper

I came across this on the internet at Eurobricks:

This set has been rumored and some preliminary images have been around for sometime, however this is the first time that images of sufficient detail have surfaced.

On first inspection I like the set, it gives you another Cad Bane (you can never have too many of those!), Obi-Wan Kenobi as Rako Hardeen from the Bounty Hunter Arc, and a Nikto Guard, no its not a weequay, look closely at the face and it appears to be a Nikto from this Arc when they land on Nal Hutta.

Image sourced from wookiepedia.com

The one disappointing aspect of this set is that there will be no Moralo Eval the charming individual who's plan it is to assassinate the Chancelor.

Image sourced starwars.com

On the whole I am looking forward to this set very much as it brings a little more of the bounty hunter feel to the series, too often Lego has focused on the Republic vs the Separatists and missed some of the side characters from this television series, a shame that this is starting to be addressed after the series has been cancelled.

Lego Toyfair UK Star Wars Sets 2013.

This weekend past was the UK toyfair and present was Lego.

Lego had previews of all their upcoming sets for 2013 (2nd half of the year).

As this blog is concerned with Star Wars I will only talk about the Star Wars sets based upon the information that has already been published.

75015 Corporate Alliance Tank Droid
This set comes with a new Jango, finally from descriptions it is based upon the 7748 set from 09 (shown below).

This set will also include a battle droid and a clone trooper.  Being an AOTC set hopefully we get the reddish battle droid and a phase one clone.

75016 Homing Spider Droid
Another set that is similar to one previously created being the 7681 spider droid from 2008 packaging line (shown below).

This set is supposed to come with a clone trooper, 2SBD's (Super Battle Droids) and Adi Galia, although this may be Stass Allie.  Depending on which way Lego goes with the last figure it could either be an AOTC or a CW set?

750017 Duel On Geonosis

This set features Dooku and Yoda (both reported to have new sculpts) from the end sequence whereby the two fight against one another.  There is apparently some scenery from the hangar and a new pilot droid (possibly for the Solar Sailor) along with a Poggle the Lesser:

75018 Jeks-14 Stealth Starfighter
This is from the new Yoda's Chronicles short, not too much info apart from it looks a little like a Z-95 is reported to be Red and Black and comes with Jek-14, Separatist Bounty Hunter, Special Forces Clone Trooper and a droid called R4-G0.

75019 AT-TE
Another PT set straight out of AOTC, this AT-TE doesn't sound to be too much different from the 2008 7675 (shown below)

This set is purported to contain, Mace Windu, Clone Trooper Gunner, a few Battle droids and Coleman Trebor (a jedi who dies at the Genosion arena in AOTC, shown below)

75020 Jabba’s Sailbarge
Quite possibly the most anticipated set for 2013, judging by the preliminary pictures that have been shown on the net (seen in a post below) it will be filled with a few new minifigures.
Contaiend within this set are: Jabba, Max Rebo, Leia in the slave costume, a new Weequay, and R2 with the drinks tray.  This set also includes Ree-Yees, so for OT fans a little bitt more love has been shown to Jabba and his minions.
The ship is reported to open out revealing Max Rebo's keyboard.

75021 Republic Gunship
Another ship that apparently has little change from the 2008 model except its swapped from Clone Wars theme to PT theme.  This set is supposed to include a new Obi Wan, Anakin and Padme in her white outfit (according to fbtb ) it also shows the midriff after the nexu had a swipe.

75022 Mandalorian Speeder
This set remains an unknown quantity to me as I am not too sure what the speeder will look like, hopefully New York , this set is described as having Maul with his Cyborg legs and 2 new Mandalorian Super Commando's.  Not too sure how this will work but I'm guessing its been comprised from the current Clone Wars  as seen on StarWars.com

75023 Star Wars Advent Calendar

This year will feature both a young Boba and a Santa Jango, not too shabby in my opinion.

Information was compiled from: fbtb, brickfanatics and Eurobricks.

Hasbro & Lego Star Wars 2013.

With Christmas upon us, there have been some images that are starting to appear of both Hasbro and Lego's offering for 2013.

Hasbro:

Currently in Australia we can purchase the new Class 2 vehicles for around $50 from Toys R Us.

In the last week the class 1 vehicles images have started to appear on the internet and one of the things instantly recognisable is the inclusion of 2 figures differing from the traditional 1:

I like the small fighter and a non CW Yoda is always nice, this set seems to have the EP 2 release in mind.
Not a fan of this set perhaps its the fact that I could never envisage a set like this existing in the SW landscape after episode 1.

I like both of these sets and for collectors this year the Dropship was incredibly hard to find, so another set that brings the vehicle back is welcome.  I think the AT-RT has been used frequently, however, it is still a great set and a new paint scheme always helps.  The addition of the TK tactical droid is a good addition also.

Lego:

Recently Lego also showed an upcoming set for 2013 being the Battle of Hoth.  This has the appearance of a giant battle pack with some nice inclusions:

  •  General Riekan.
  •  Snowspeeder.
  •  Snowtroopers with another E-Web.
  •  Trenches.
  • Imperial Probe Droid.

Perhaps one day we can get a set that includes an Ion Cannon as previous sets have not included any...

Lego 2013 Set news

At the recently run Star Wars Celebration, there was an unveiling of the breakdown for Lego's sets at the beginning of 2013.

The sets to be released are:

Buildable galaxy series 3:
Kamino w/ R4-P17 droid and Jedi Starfighter
Coruscant w/ Clone Pilot and Republic Assault Striker
Asteroid Filed w/ Tie Bomber and Tie Pilot

Regular Sets:
The Old Republic Battle Pack (2x Sith Troopers + 2x Republic Troopers)
Clone Troopers vs Droidekas Battle Pack (sniper droideka)
A Wing w/ Ackbar, Han and A Wing pilot
AT-RT w/ Yoda, Clone trooper and Assassin Droid
Z-95 Headhunter w/ 2xclone troopers, General Krell
The Rancor Pit (as revealed at SDCC) with Luke, Malakili and Gammorean Guard

Must say I am pleased with the varied nature of the release, the breakdown is possibly its most balanced yet with:

1 - OR Set.

1 - OT Sets.
1 - PT Set.
2 -CW Sets.

I think the 3 sets I am most looking forward to are the Z-95, with a 4 armed Krell, no SW minifigure has been done this way (no mentions of Grevious as a droid really doesn't count for a torso piece), the Rancor Pit cause it comes with a Rancor (Ranka as Jimmy Mac from the Forceast has called it).

Lastly I am looking forward to the Old Republic battle pack as some troop building could be done here!

EU or not EU?

Star Wars is generally associated with two era's, the Original Trilogy (OT) or the Prequel Trilogy (PT).  These 2 era's are the most significant within the Star Wars universe, however, with the release of Bioware's MMO 'The Old Republic' a new generation of people are now exposed to a period that lies outside the accepted PT or OT time line in an era known as the EU (Expanded Universe).

The EU is not limited to a period of time that exists before the OT or PT, rather, it can be loosely defined as the period of time that occurs before, between (to a certain extent as the Clone Wars series fills in most of the details) and after the 6 movies.

EU is not a new concept for those who are engrossed in the SW universe and perhaps it would be wise to have a look at how some of the earlier origins of this canon developed.

The 2 pieces that had the most impact on the EU can be defined as the novel/comic Shadows of the Empire and the Thrawn Trilogy.  These two pieces of work gave fans answers to two questions that seemed to exist from almost the moment Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back and Episode 6 - The Return of the Jedi, these questions were "What happened to Han and how did he end up in Jabba's palace?" and "what happened to the Empire after the demise of the Emperor and Darth Vader after the defeat at Endor?"  These 2 pieces gave us the first look into a universe far beyond to the 6 films and for those who read these a new world of potential opened up.

The first of the Thrawn Trilogy, Heir to the Empire was published in 1991, a novel by Timothy Zahn.  This gave fans their first look at the years after the battle of Endor where the Empire re-appears under the leadership of one of Emperor Palpatine's Grand Admirals.  Grand Admiral Thrawn was introduced, which is an iconic moment as he is a non human (a blue skinned Chiss), something not typically seen in the upper echelons of the Empire.

In this trilogy we were introduced to the species the Noghri, a lethal species whose debt to the Empire was a result of Darth Vader and his interaction with their home world.  The cloned mad Jedi Master Joruus C'Boath on a planet called Wayland.  Mara Jade an ex-employee of the Emperor's court working for a smuggler Talon Karrde  on the planet Myrkr, where a species of force repellent creatures exist.

This trilogy deals with the conflicts between people who hold others responsible for their current situation, while delving into the lives of the heroes we followed in the OT movies.  Han and Leia are married and expecting twins, Luke is dealing with his fathers past, all these aspects and the new characters introduced couple with Zahn's writing style led to a thoroughly enjoyable first step into the unknown post the movies.

Shadows of the Empire followed after the success of the Thrawn trilogy.  This novel dealt with the interplay between Darth Vader and a Vigo of the Black Sun criminal organisation named Xizor, a Falleen, both who were positioning for Palpatine's favour.  Luke, Leia and Lando along with Wedge Antilles from Rogue Squadron are pursuing Boba Fett on his way to deliver Han to Jabba.

This novel continued the adventure style that we became accustomed to in Episode 6 along with a strengthening of the relationships between Leia, Luke, Chewie and Lando vying for their trust after handing Han over to the Empire in Episode 5.

Through the pursuit of Han we are introduced to another character being Dash Rendar, an individual who has no love for the Empire after the way his family was treated.  Dash is hired to assist with trying to prevent Boba from delivering to Jabba.

The characters go through highs and lows on their way to getting to the point where Episode 6 begins, this reinforces the start of that movie, understanding how they came to be where they were and the change in characters, such as Bouush being played by Leia.

The success of these 2 stories led to a hole spawn of other EU novels, majority of these leading up to the last 3 main series of stories being the New Jedi Order, Legacy of the Force and The Fate of the Jedi.

The New Jedi Order dealt with a new threat to the whole Galaxy by a species called the Yuuzhan Vong.  The Yuuzhan Vong were a warrior caste that detested technology and considered only organic creatures to be acceptable and everything else being a perversion of life and as such waged war against what they thought to be an inferior collection of species.

This series was memorable for several reasons, one being the murder of Chewie very early in the series (the first time one of the main characters had been killed outside of the movies) and Anakin Solo later on, the other memorable being the capacity for the Yuuzhan Vong to resist all the techniques that Jedi could use, the lightsaber had no affect on their weapons or armour and the force was futile as they could not manipulate nor sense the Yuuzhan Vong in the force, this made for a particularly interesting time in Star Wars history as the EU went back to a dark place similar to the OT.

The Legacy of the Force series dealt with the slide of the Solo's other son Jacen to the dark side of the force through the guidance of Lumiya, Jacen's relationship with his Uncle Luke was an interesting side note along with Jacen's torturous ways and his appreciation for the way that his Grandfather (Darth Vader) handled matters.

Under Jacen's command the military waged war on races of people and included the burning of the Wookiee planet Kashyyyk, used his influence with a Jedi apprentice Tehiri Vella who he had slay the Imperial leader Giliad Pellaeon.

Jacen raised the fury of Boba Fett by killing his daughter along with Luke's wife Mara Jade.  In the end it was Boba Fett who helped train Jaina Solo to fight her brother using Mandalorian techniques to overcome and eventually slay him.

The events of the Legacy of the Force flowed into the Fate of the Jedi Series.

Within the Fate of the Jedi Series we read about the power struggle between the Galactic Alliance leader Natasi Daala and the Jedi Order, whereby she exiles Grand Master Luke Skywalker as a result of Jacen's actions.  Luke takes the opportunity to trace Jacen's steps and to try and see where he went wrong.

While this is unfolding another series of events leads to the emergence of 'The Lost Tribe of the Sith' a race that has evolved in hiding from the days of Naga Sadow.  The race of Sith emerge in part to work with Luke Skywalker against the evil power known as Abeloth, who has been awakened.

Events in this series unfold highlighting the power in the force and the link to past traditions are broken down, a tribe of Sith defies Lord Bane's rule of 2, Jedi have attachments and they are strong but help them identify who they are as well.

In the last few years we have also seen a shift in Star Wars EU literature, there is less of the 'After Battle of Yavin' (ABY) than previously written and more filling in the period of time identified as 'The Old Republic'.

The Old Republic tells stories of the Sith through 3 novels to date specifically:

Fatal Alliance
Deceived.
Revan.

These 3 novels tend t deal with the period of time before the rule of 2 and are approximately 3700 years before the Battle of Yavin (BBY).

There have also been several others that have been written throughout that deal with the evolution of the galaxy as we knew it in the movies.  Darth Bane established the 'Rule of two' which played key role in the 6 movies.

There have been other pieces that have been written about closer to the period of the BBY, in Knight Errant some 1000 years (approx) before the modern movies.

My point is that we can no longer see Star Wars as purely OT vs PT when the EU has played such a big hand in the way people view Star Wars these days.

Merchandise

Merchandise has also embraced the EU, in the current Hasbro Line there are several EU figures on the market, two being Darth Malgus from 'The Old Republic' and Nom Anor a Yuuzhan Vong from the New Jedi Order novel series. Others released in this collection include Galen Marek from 'The Force Unleashed' computer games, Bastila Shan (shown below with Revan and Malak) from the original 'Knights of the Old Republic' computer game and Shae Vizsla also from 'The Old Republic' MMO.

Preceding this was in the Thirty Anniversary Collection with Darth Malak, Darth Revan both from the 'Kinghts of the Old Republic' (shown in the image below)  and a Pre Cyborg Grievous.

Imaged sourced from:
http://flickrhivemind.net/Tags/revan/Recent
Lego have also had sets that they released based upon the EU, some of these include the to be released Old Republic Sets:

Images sourced on Eurobricks forum

The Old republic has received a lot of merchandise support ranging from comics, computer accessories to clothing, offered by a company called Jinx

Even the 12" figure market has been littered with EU characters, ranging from Darth Malgus a pack in for the Collectors Edition of 'The Old Republic' game to the Shae Vizsla and Darth Revan busts.  The EU appears to be growing in popularity further supporting the claim that there are now 3 legitimate cannons OT, PT and EU.

The original break through in EU products was Hasbro's Power of the Force collection which shows the Dark Empire characters many of whom were in the Thrawn Trilogy, these figures came with a 3D diorama on the packaging.

Imaged Source from Brains Toys

There was also the successful Shadows of the Empire line as well which featured the 5 figures shown below to accompany the first of the comic 2 packs (Darth Vader vs Prince Xizor and Boba Fett vs IG-88) along with Dash Rendar's Outrider and a Swoop with rider.

It is my hope that through this post people have come to understand the role that the EU plays in the life of a Star Wars fan, I acknowledge that it is not too everyones liking, some see it as a perversion of the original story, I tend to view it as an expansion on the liberties we see in the original movies.  The EU provides fans with the opportunity to see relationships grow, friends die, conflicts rise and enemies renew.
